Intelligent Web Applications

This EPSRC funded Industrial CASE Studentship PhD research project aims to: ‘develop and apply novel software agents using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies for blending the “OpenMind" database with any given ontology'.

Hence, to build a novel intelligent software agent that can auto-categorise documents for Knowledge and Content Management applications more accurately than current (statistical based) techniques. We expect the engine to have commercial applications in supporting the development of intelligent web applications whose design and content can dynamically adapt to the user.

Thanks to ‘Common Sense Computing’, web applications are learning to understand the real meaning that lies in the data they are dealing with, instead of just blindly search and retrieve information by keywords, and hence provide a more accurate service.

Moreover, Common Sense Computing can make web services be more intuitive and people-friendly. Applied in conjunction with NLP technologies, it dramatically enhances the HCI, which is a key element for many applications especially in the fields of e-commerce, e-tourism and e-health.

The primary researcher is Erik Cambria (Italy) working under the principal academic supervision of Dr. Amir Hussain, the Project's Principal Investigator and Reader in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Stirling, (Scotland), and with industrial supervision of Chris Eckl, Research Director at Sitekit Labs (Isle of Skye, Scotland).

The research will be in collaboration with Catherine Havasi of MIT Media Lab (USA) who was part of the research team that pioneered the concept of Common Sense Computing, which will be further developed and researched as part of the project in the context of semantic web mining.
